Every culture has some standards and morals as a foundation. Culture is the viewpoint, outlooks, values, goals, and practices shared by a society. Sociality also has enormous impact on these standards and values. Society doses it best to encourage or enforce some behaviors. Clearly, if these behaviors are right society encourage that behavior. For choosing a place for my ethnography project I tried to choose a place that I can observe diverse cultures at the same time, so I did decide to indicate federal café restaurant which is located on the first floor of federal building in Los Angeles. My observation took place on this place on Tuesday evening around 11:30 am. Federal café restaurant is a small place inside the federal building Los Angeles, Which is provide the daily foods need it for all employees who work on this building as well as other people who come to this building to get their passport. This small restaurant serve different foods like burrito, hamburgers, different beverages, and snakes. The method that I chose was participant observation. I did choose this method because I did not want my observation have an effects on people’s behaviors and norms, and I though because this is family oriented place most people really doesn’t like to interrupt with other people. When I went to the restaurant I wasn't sure which kind of social behavior I have to more focus on. Nevertheless, as soon as I looked around I observed different kind of social behaviors like kind of foods they ate, conversation, the way that people pay for their foods, and other factors. My analyzing would be more focus on people social behaviors on this place, how people behave on this place. I have eating out in many different restaurants, but on this place I really want to get some ideas regarding social behaviors of customers and how they interact to each other. From my observation I learned unique collection of different cultures and ethnicities cause this small place become successful, however social behaviors and interaction between customers was completely different on restaurant among customers.
My assumption and biases was base on behaviors of people on public place. I always have been concerned to make my observation on people behaviors in public place like restaurant. Some times people surprise you by their behavior on the public. I assuming that people are not going to the restaurant only for eating food, but some times for social interaction to other people they prefer to go to the restaurant. Social interaction is the significant behavior that people have with one another. Good places for interaction are places where people are able to meet another people from different cultures or diverse backgrounds like restaurant. The behavior that people have on the social always represents their culture. As an example during my observation I saw a group of teenagers who finished their foods, and there were ready to pay. As I observed they split the bills. Among American is really common to share the cost of the meal equally, in contrast to my culture is splitting bills indicating insulting to other parties. Weber Bruce in his article “Common-Sense Sociologist, Dies at 93”, evaluated the people culture and beliefs, and shown that how Values and beliefs among different cultures are the most two elements that can have effects on people behaviors. Values and beliefs help to form a society by telling what is good and bad, attractive and unpleasant. He argued that clearly, while behavior may vary from one cultures to another, but all of these differences supported by moral values, which are everyday across cultures.
When I arrived to the restaurant, dining area was packed with the different people from different cultures, ethnicities and age. I was met with the long line. It wasn’t far from my expectation to see people from different cultures and ethnicities waiting on line to order food, because this is the only café inside the building, and there are three different agencies are works on this building. People staying in line imitated to the cultural norms. soon as I get inside the restaurant I found a table near to cash register, I did start my observation. There was a Russian family sitting next to me. They had a boy and a girl. Their son just learned how to walk once he start walking I recognized that he start learning his first steps, he grabbed every thing to get help to walk, and his father was looks hungry with out paying attention to the boy just filling her own stomach, and the mother was the only one who helped the baby how to start walking with out grabbing any things, she didn't get any foods, I though that’s why she is skinny. And old gentleman with his son sat exactly on the table which was located behind me, and I overheard them complaining about the taste of the foods, with out eating much they left the place. Some of the table was loaded with the used plates because of the lack of enough workers to gather them. Next to the cashier I overheard the old Persian lady start complaining about the place, and with the strong accent she try to convinced the manager about the over charge on her card. The manager was a middle age lady, whom apologized. I saw a middle age man who standing on the middle of the restaurant and made a conversation with the little girl in front of him. I understood that was a good communication among the foreigners that is should happen more often in our sociality. When I was about to leave, I recognized there were food leftovers all over the tables and on the floor, but some customers put tip for the workers on the edge of tables. The Hispanic worker whom was cleaning the floor and the tables had very short conversation with the customers.
My observations confirmed my original assumption, about social behaviors, and interaction among different cultures and ethnicities. People in public place cooperate less with others across them and paid more attention to their food. Since it is a cultural restaurant and there are many different cultures, behaviors and interaction of people was truly different from other restaurants that I have been to. No one at this place talked each other, except the conversation between the little girl and old man strangers. Customer’s behaviors in this place are demonstrating of their own cultures. I found that people talking typically in their native language. When the workers came to clean the table I saw different reactions from different tables, some families use words like thank you, while some parties didn’t pay attention to them. I considered all of these reactions and behaviors are come from their cultures. On an article tilted “ How To Communicate with other people from different cultures”, Lois Wade specified that Cultural differences can sometimes make communication difficult for some people. Whether a person speaks in different languages has different clashing stands on ethical and worldwide issues.
From this observation I learned being on different cultures could have impact on human social behaviors. Culture can shape our viewpoints about how people are showing to behave. Some times for some people are tremendously difficult to be make communication with the other peoples who came from different cultures or ethnicities. As Sandra Smith in her article titled “ Social and Cultural Interaction” debated Social and cultural interaction between people from different ethnicities and cultures generates the cultural sensitivity which by considerate that helps all community members gain a level of comfort with one another and expands their obligation for all cultures. As an example making an eye contact among American culture show their self-confidence and being polite, in contrast to my culture making an eye contact indication you are rude in front of other party during the conversation. Another example that I can bring up, which I observed during my observations was shaking hands and kissing the same sex. Among the conservative Muslims and some cultures it is prohibition to shaking hands between the unrelated men and women, which is in contrast to other cultures. There are many examples of social behaviors among different cultures, which are certainly interesting to analysis.
In conclusion, from my observation on café restaurant, I found out by raising crime all over our society, people are very afraid to make conversation on a public place to someone who they don't know. Our sociality is ruled with harsh manners about public social behaviors. When people go out they really expecting to don't talk to any body that they don't know. During this short time of my observation I recognized how much people’s social behaviors have been changed, and they become more close-minded sociality. They really don't want to work to gather and to some appreciations about the works that someone else performed for them, exactly like when the workers came to clean the tables some people they didn't care to say just thank you. We are become increasingly private in our sociality. Because of excessively crime going around us in our sociality, people are expected to not look at or chat to anyone.
